Online Presence Workshop

On Monday January 13, Penn State's chapter of ACHCA held a workshop for our members on how to build a presence online. Hannah Ross, our president, discussed different ways to present yourself through LinkedIn and ePortfolios.

In the first segment on LinkedIn, we discussed how to market yourself on social media. By talking through what to include and what makes a candidate stand out, we were able to alter our pages and craft a better look for ourselves. We also highlighted how important volunteering is, and drove home that any experience can be useful if you can explain why it is relevant.

With the help of Dr. Spokus, we shifted from LinkedIn to the importance of having an ePortfolio. One advantage of having your own website is that it helps you stand out among your peers. Almost everyone will have a LinkedIn, but having an entire website dedicated to you is above and beyond. Another useful thing about ePortfolios is that they allow you to express your interests outside of school and work. For example, Hannah showcased not only her academic work on her ePortfolio, but also her love of photography.

Finally, we wrapped up our conversation by talking about how to link it all together. It is only useful to have online presences if they can be found, so it's important to make sure you can move from one to another. Links from one page to the next proved to make our cyber experience a smooth one.

With all of this advice, our members are surely ready to develop themselves online!
