Nate Ashton

Nate Ashton, recent graduate of Penn State's HPA program, shared his academic and professional experiences with ACHCA on Monday. Nate is currently the assistant to the executive director at Foxdale Village Retirement Community in State college, but just a few short years ago, he started there as an intern.

Foxdale is a continuing care retirement community with a lot to offer. This includes 250 independent living residents as well as assisted care and mid-level support. Residents 65+ enjoy pools, gym, and dining on the Quaker directed campus. The board at Foxdale is 50% Quaker along with the 10% Quaker residents. The board is made up of 13 members, which consist of 10 community members and 3 residents. Nate emphasized that Quaker facilities value the individual and getting consensus and input from residents.

After Nate's internship, he stayed at Foxdale part time to implement the Electronic Health Records system there. After he graduated, he created his position as assistant to the CEO, and has a multitude of responsibilities. These include: coordinating with the board of trustees, setting up meetings, hosting receptions, and implementing specific structures and policies.

Nate talked a bit about the internship at Foxdale that started his career in hopes that others will seek out the same. The FSA internship application opens January 18th and closes on February 18th. Foxdale is hiring health services and human resource interns specifically, but will accept others at their on site interviews. Benefits of the program include stipends and housing.
