ACHCA September Meeting 9/8/20

This month’s meeting included Frank King, an HPA instructor at Penn State, as one of our guest speakers. Mr. King spoke about his teaching experience, as well as his background and experience in the industry. He focused his time on talking about long term care and acute care, the differences, and the requirements for certain positions in the industry.

King discussed the differences in acute care and long term care. Some of them include the fact that long term care focuses more on building relationships with the patients and their families and looks at the process of healthcare holistically rather than handing patient department to department like they do in acute care. Long term care requires certain certifications because you are working with a vulnerable population. NHA’s have federal requirements they need to meet in order to work in a long term care facility.

Pennsylvania’s requirements for NHA certifications include 1000 hours of clinical experience, a 120 hour class, and an exam that you are required to pass. Penn State offers HPA 443 that allows students to complete this training through the University Park campus. 443 is taught my King himself, as well as other HPA staff. There are less than 1500 licensed NHA’s in Pennsylvania so it is a growing career choice. Most people do not enter the industry as a licensed NHA, the first experience in long term care is often a supervisory role overseeing a department within the organization. Overall, becoming a licensed NHA is a great choice for someone interested in long term care, and the HPA 443 class can help you get there!
